This book explores the transformative power of pain and sorrow in human life. It delves into the idea that a sad person, though burdened by suffering, can find meaning and growth in their struggles. Pain and hardship are not just inevitable parts of life - they are essential tools for human evolution. The journey toward perfection is paved with conflicts, choices, and challenges that shape our existence. Translated title: The Journey of Ibn Fattouma

Author: Mahfouz, Naguib

Genre: Social Novel / Classics

Year: 2025 | Pages: 171 | Origin: AFG | BA Seq Num: 89051

Translated
In this provocative and dreamy parable, a young man disillusioned by the corruption of his homeland sets out on a quest to find Gebel, the land of perfection, from which no one has ever returned. On his way, Ibn Fattouma passes through a series of very different lands - realms where the moon is worshipped, where marriage does not exist, where kings are treated like gods, and where freedom toleration, and justice are alternately held as the highest goods. All of these places, however, are inevitably marred by the specter of war, and Ibn Fattouma finds himself continually driven onward, ever seeking. Like the protagonists of A Pilgrim's Progress and Gulliver's Travels, Naguib Mahfouz's hero travels not through any recognizable historical landscape, but through timeless aspects of human possibility

This novel is inspired by the life and tragic death of Mursa, my wife's aunt, who endured unimaginable cruelty during the years of organizational wars. Married to a villager from Syed, Mursa suffered violent abuse from her in-laws, which eventually led to her death. The story is told through the character of Masooma, whose life mirrors Mursa's, though the events are fictionalized to protect the privacy of those involved. The novel portrays not only the personal suffering of Masooma but also parallels it with the broader societal and national struggles of Afghanistan during the tumult of war.

The narrative unfolds in parallel, linking Masooma's personal challenges with the collective suffering of the Afghan people. The story also touches on the life of my close friend, Farid Ahmed Arezo, whose own battle with cancer and subsequent treatment in Germany is woven into the larger fabric of the novel. Through Masooma's struggles and Farid's journey, the novel explores the emotional and societal toll of war, injustice, and survival in a deeply troubled nation
